Carter, Joy Ellen (Slater), 76, passed away April 1, 2014. Joy was a retired USD 259 teacher. Born to Dr. Paul R. Slater and Daisy Slater on January 18, 1938, she was the middle of five children. Her parents were Disciples of Christ Missionaries in China until the start of World War II. Her family moved to Wichita in the 1940s where her father worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Joy graduated from Wichita East High School in 1956 then attended Phillips University in Enid, OK where she met her husband, Charles Lee Carter. Joy also earned a Masters Degree from Friends University. Joy had a life-long love of children, teaching and reading. After a long career with USD 259, with tours at Horace Mann, Jardine, East and West, she retired in 2001. Preceded in death by her parents Dr. Paul and Daisy Slater, brothers William A. Slater, David (Butch) Slater, sister, Mary Jo Penry. Joy is survived by: husband Charles of Wichita, brother Charles B. Slater of Wichita, Sister-in-law Karen Slater, Overland Park, Brother-in-law Rev. Durward Penry, Springfield, MO son Kurt Carter (Jean), daughter Jennifer Carter Robinson (Fritz), daughter Heidi Carter Clark (Mike), of Kirkwood, MO, son Cameron Carter of St. Charles, MO, son Luke Carter (Dr. Christen Skaer), Wichita. Grandmother of Jessica Cook (Ben), Hannah, Elijah & Addie Carter; Will, Carter and Braden Robinson; Casey, Riley and Luke Carter; Becket Clark; Great Grandmother of Cameron, and Aunt to many amazing young women and men.
