Mitchell, Irl Raymond, age 86, retired retail sales at Sears & Roebuck, passed away January 2, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. The visitation with the family will be held from 6 – 8 PM Tuesday, in the Garden Chapel of Watson Reflection Pointe, 3201 S. Webb Road, with services scheduled for 10:30 AM Wednesday, at Hillside Christian Church. Irl was born August 13, 1922, in Shattuck, OK. During WW II, he was assigned to the United States Army Air Corps 464th Bomb Group, where he flew 50 missions in a B-24 Bomber into Nazi Germany as a ball turret gunner. Irl served as a member and Director of the Sedgwick County Sheriff Reserve during the 1960’s and 70’s. He was a member of the Sunflower/Bestor G. Brown Masonic Lodge where he served as Worshipful Master and Past President of the International High Twelve. He was the Great Grandson of legendary Boston Clipper ship builder Donald McKay. Irl loved his family and community. On June 17, 1951, he married Marjorie Hill. He is remembered by his loving wife of 57 years, Marjorie, children, Michael (Catie) Mitchell of Wichita, Mary Mitchell of Wichita, Melody (Rick) Bilyeu of Arkansas City, Mona (Kevin) Logsdon of Wichita, Maurice “Mo” (Juli) Mitchell of Wichita, 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
