Hu, Chay C., age 61, chef and restaurateur, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009. Chay was born June 14, 1948 to Lu Que in Saigon, Viet Nam. He married Moui (May) Ly in 1975 and emigrated to the United States in 1979. He helped to establish a popular restaurant named Kwan Wah, based in Wichita, and served as the head chef and owner of Kwan Wah East on Oliver Street from 1984-2000. After retiring from Kwan Wah, he continued to work as a chef at Dillon’s. During his life, he enjoyed meeting new friends, keeping up with current events, and helping others in any way that he could. He had a strong sense of community and often spent his free time translating for his non-English speaking friends and relatives. He highly valued education and worked very hard with many long hours his entire life so that his children could have a higher education, even though he himself never had the opportunity to go to college because he came from a poor family in Vietnam. He was very proud of his children’s successes and he had no regrets in his life. Chay is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Muoi Ly, Wichita; children, Stephen Hu, Jenny Hu, San Diego, Anna Hu, Wichita; daughter-in-law, Taylor Sun; grand-daughter, Samantha Hu; and many close family and friends.
