Larry Welch

Laurence Sylvester “Larry” Welch Jr., 79, a retired Skelgas manager, died Thursday, March 11, 2010.
He was born June 28, 1930, in Macon, Mo., to Laurence and Mildred (Moss) Welch. He grew up in Macon and played basketball for Macon High school. He graduated from Macon High in 1948. After high school, he served a year in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career with Skelgas. During the first two years of his career, Mr. Welch worked for the Macon Skelgas dealer while also serving in the Navy Reserve. He then transferred to the Skelgas office in Kansas City, Kan., where he delivered propane to customers as well as installed and serviced propane appliances. In 1966, he was offered the position of manager at Parsons Skelgas and served there until his retirement from the company in 1985 after 35 years of service.
After retirement, Mr. Welch worked part time for Crooks Hardware of Parsons and enjoyed spending time with his wife and family on the Combs farm near Macon, Mo.
In 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie Combs, and they made their home in Kansas City-North, Kansas City, Mo. They celebrated their 55th anniversary March 20, 2009.
Larry served in various capacities at the First Christian Church of Parsons, where he was a member for more than 40 years. Larry and Rose sponsored three backpacking trips to Colorado with the First Christian Church youth group. He assisted the Boy Scout program in Parsons, served in the Parsons Kiwanis Club and enjoyed archery, photography and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie; a son, Kelly and his wife, Bronwyn, of Wichita; a daughter, Laurie of Tulsa; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, James Keith and his wife, Mary, of Galesburg, Ill.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Macon, Mo.
The family suggests memorials to First Christian Church of Parsons. There will be a gathering of friends and family from 10 - 11 AM Wednesday, at the Crossroads Christian Church in Macon, MO, in memory of Larry.
