Vivian Fae Collins Campbell, 90, passed away Friday, November 29, 2024, born May 21, 1934, to William and Camilla (Holben) Collins of El Cerrito, California. Married Glen Campbell in 1953.
Vivian first met Glen Campbell at a church camp and their friendship grew while attending high school together in Lamoni, Iowa. They married while attending Graceland College. As they started their family, Vivian and Glen moved to Ames Iowa where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics at Iowa State College. Glen became a minister for the Community of Christ Church, which relocated the family many times, first to Richland, WA and then to Fairbanks, Alaska. While in Alaska, Vivian obtained a teaching certificate, and her first job helped indigenous women from remote Alaskan villages learn employable skills for life in “the big city.” When they moved to Anchorage she taught Jr High School on Elmendorf Air Force Base. After Alaska, they relocated to Flint, MI and as their empty nest years approached, they returned to school together and both obtained master’s degrees from Michigan State University. After another relocation to Great Falls, Montana, Vivian continued working on her PhD through Michigan State University while also teaching at Montana State University in Bozeman. Vivian completed her Doctorate in 1984 with a focus on family strengths. After a number of years in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Vivian and Glen retired to their hometown of Lamoni, IA.
Throughout the years Vivian served the Community of Christ church in many ways including teaching, and as a pianist and organist. Her education degrees enhanced her innate abilities to help those who sought her out for counsel, especially individuals and families facing difficulties. Vivian hoped to be remembered as a good friend who could keep confidences. As a lay minister, she served in leadership roles for the world church and held the priesthood office of High Priest.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 70 years-Glen Campbell, and her brother Hale Collins. Vivian is survived by her brothers David Collins and Robert Collins; children, John (Betty Smith) Campbell and Aaron (Michele Riley) Campbell; and grandsons, Brooks (Anya) Foxen and Hunter (Lindsey Morris) Campbell.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Outreach International, 112 W. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108.
